A: “File and Suspend” is a loophole in the Social Security law that is about to be done away with as of April 29, 2016. Those who are eligible may still be able to take advantage of the old rules and reap the benefits. People eligible for the greatest benefit from this strategy are married couples where the higher earning spouse will reach full retirement age (66) by April 29, 2016 and has not yet started to receive Social Security benefits. The windfall comes from the lower earning spouse‘s ability to collect a spousal benefit at age 66 (which is half the monthly benefit that the higher earning spouse would have received at age 66 had he or she not suspended their benefit), while the higher earning spouse will enjoy a 32% greater benefit at age 70. To take advantage, now is the time to act!
